Urias® Johnstone Air Splints

How does air splints work?

Provide support and safety

The air splints holds your arm or leg in a good, stable position.
This helps you move more easily without overworking your stronger side or risking unsafe positions.

Reduce muscle tightness

The gentle, even pressure of the air splints can calm muscle overactivity (spasticity) and make the limb feel more relaxed and makes movements more comfortable.

Help your brain “find” the less involved side again

Training with the air splints gives your brain clearer sensory information about where your limb is and how it is moving.
This is essential for rebuilding control and awareness after neurological injury.

Helps you with earlier and more frequent training

With the air splints supporting your limb, you can start moving earlier in your recovery — even if the movement is very small.
Early activation is important because the brain learns best through repetition and active involvement.

Support independent training

Alone or used together with PANat-Laptools, air splints make it possible to practice safely on your own or in a group.
This increases your training time, motivation, and confidence — helping you progress between therapy sessions.

Are air splints safe?

Yes. air splints are safe when used correctly and under the guidance of your therapist.

  • They are inflated just enough to give support, not tightly.
  • They are worn for a limited and appropriate time
  • Your skin and comfort should be checked regularly for irritation after use

Your therapist will also make sure the splint is suitable for you, especially if you have conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the leg), acute phlebitis, right-sided heart failure, or acute fluid build-up in the lungs (pulmonary oedema).”

How do air splints help my recovery?

Air splints help you:

  • Use your hemiparetic arm or leg more actively
  • Improve your ability to feel and control movement
  • Reduce stiffness, pain, and swelling
  • Prevent the body from “forgetting” the hemiparetic side
  • Transfer new skills into everyday activities

In short: air splints make it easier, safer, and more effective for you to participate in your rehabilitation — and to keep progressing over time.
