PANat-Laptools®
PANat-Laptools®
A modular therapy tool system for structured, active, and restorative neurorehabilitation
PANat-Laptools® is a modular, low-tech, and clinically versatile therapy tool system developed to support rehabilitation of the arm and hand — especially in individuals with severe paresis, hemiparesis or paralysis after stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other neurological disorders.
The system was invented and created by occupational therapist Fransizka Wälder, and is now used internationally as part of the PANat approach to proactive neurorehabilitation.
PANat-Laptools® are designed to make it possible for patients to practice early, safely, and actively, even when very little voluntary movement is present. By providing structure, stability, and graded challenge, the tools enable therapists to guide patients from basic preparatory exercises toward complex, meaningful functional actions.

How it supports selective control and motor relearning
For many neurological patients motor control is fragmented, and the affected limb cannot support itself.
PANat-Laptools® provide:
- stable surfaces
- guided pathways for movement
- graded resistance or facilitation
- Limit unwanted movement
By reducing complexity, patients gain the opportunity to relearn selective movements such as:
- shoulder flexion
- scapular control
- reaching
- grasp-and-release
- Hipflexion
This is essential before more advanced functional actions can be retrained.
Why it is ideal for early activation and severe impairments
PANat-Laptools® are particularly effective during acute and early subacute phases, when:
- muscle activity is minimal
- the limb is difficult to control
- therapists must avoid compensatory patterns
- traditional task-training is too complex
The tools offer safe biomechanical guidance that enables even tiny or invisible muscle activity to be activated and perceived.
This supports neuroplasticity, builds early success, and prevents learned non-use.
How it works as high-intensity, “hands-off” and self-directed training
Used alone or in combination with Urias® Johnstone Air Splints, PANat-Laptools® create a structured environment for independent practice.
This is central to the PANat approach, where patients are encouraged to:
- train between therapy sessions
- participate in group sessions
- repeat exercises frequently
- practice actively in their own environment
The result is more repetition, higher intensity, and better long-term carry-over — critical factors for cortical reorganisation.
How it is functional, goal-oriented task training
Every PANat-Laptools® exercise can be linked to a concrete functional goal, such as:
- reaching for a cup
- stabilising the arm to hold cutlery
- pushing up from a chair
- supporting the arm during dressing
Exercises start with controlled, simplified movement patterns and gradually progress to more dynamic and complex activities.
This ensures that improvements at the body-function level translate directly into meaningful participation and daily life tasks — fully aligned with the ICF model.
How it integrates within the PANat approach
PANat-Laptools® express PANat’s five core treatment principles:
- Restorative activation of the affected side – not compensation.
- Behavioural neuroplasticity – “use it and improve it.”
- Motor learning principles – structure, feedback, task orientation.
- Motivation – independence, autonomy, success experiences.
- Self-directed training – safe practice outside therapy time.
Combined with air splints, they create a highly effective, affordable, low-tech solution for continuous neurorehabilitation across all stages.
Key Functions and Therapeutic Purpose
A modular system that adapts to any level of ability
PANat-Laptools® consist of multiple tool components that can be combined, stacked, or adjusted to match different therapeutic needs.
This modularity allows clinicians to:
- simplify complex movements
- adjust the degrees of freedom
- build progressive training steps
- individualise practice to each patient
This aligns with systems theory principles: the therapist shapes the individual–task–environment interaction to promote successful movement experiences.
